IBEW Local 488, Bridgeport, received its charter April 1, 1913, with nineteen original members. With Sikorsky Aircraft, Remington Arms and Avco Lycoming in our jurisdiction we quickly grew to meet the defense needs of our nation.

In 1969 we merged with Danbury Local 525, in 1981 with Waterbury Local 660 and again in 2009 with Norwalk Local 208 to increase our jurisdictional area to include most of northwestern and southwestern Connecticut. Please visit our jurisdiction map to view the cities and town serviced by Local 488.

As technologies expand and industries transform, Local 488 is driven to continue providing a proven and skilled work force in Western Connecticut. Local 488 also continues to work with state and local officials to meet the needs of our communities with new schools and public service facilities equipped for the 21st Century.

In 2012 Local 488 opened its new headquarters and training facility in Monroe, Connecticut. Through our apprenticeships and continuing education programs we will be ready to meet new technology needs and challenges that lie ahead with the best skilled craftsmen for the electrical industry

KNOWLEDGE-SKILLS-ATTITUDE-The JATC looks for candidates that have the ability to maintain the positive attitude needed to learn the skills of the trade through on the job training assignments as well as the willingness to complete five years of schooling. By doing this, the candidate will receive the tools and the knowledge to become one of the most highly trained electrical workers in today’s workforce.

Our program consists of five years of classroom instruction and over 8,000 hours of on the job training. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from September through May.

Selection into our program is essentially like being accepted into a university with a scholarship. Program tuition is free, with the exception of the cost associated with the purchase of books.

Starting pay for new apprentices is $18.96 per hour with an aggressive wage increase schedule leading to Journeyman Wireman wages. Benefits such as annuity, pension plans, health care, dental, prescription service and other employee plans that are among the best in the industry and are also included in the package.


Requirements

Applications are available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. through 12 p.m. noon and must be completed in person. (Holiday’s excluded)

*Applicants will need High School Transcripts or GED transcripts, and photo ID at time of applying.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

-Be a High School Graduate or have a GED

-Provide Photo ID

-Provide High School or GED transcripts with proof of one full credit of Algebra

-Complete the application in person

-Receive a qualifying score on NJATC Aptitude Test

-Complete oral interview

The JATC will notify qualified applicants as to the date, time, and place of the NJATC Aptitude test and interview.

Our program can earn you up to sixty (60) training credits through the American Council of Education that may be applied to a two (2) or four (4) year college degree in qualified areas of study all while learning the electrical trade.

Selected applicants into the IBEW-NECA Local 488 Apprenticeship program will obtain employment with a Local 488 signatory employer for full time work within the jurisdiction of Local 488, and will attend evening classes from September through May at the Local 488 IBEW-NECA training facility in Monroe, CT.
